Norm Ryan Gets 180 Days in County Jail
The outcomes could have been much worse for former Haven Humane CEO Norm Ryan, accused of taking public money from the animal shelter where he worked.
As it was, he was sentenced today to 180 days in Shasta County Jail effective immediately, to be followed by 180 days’ adult work program and three years’ supervised, formal probation.
A year tied up in court, untold legal fees and court costs. Time and money lost by jurors, witnesses and court …

… but I think we get a pass card for missing last week’s. I was at the courthouse covering the Norm Ryan hearing and then, remember, we had the Igo Inn fundraiser and pies to make and spaghetti to serve. And besides, isn’t that your day to read to Manzanita students? Too many conflicting good things. We need a twin.
Kelly: You have a twin and you still seem busy. By the way, about those local boards and commissions — if anyone is interested in them, here are some links: …
Norm Ryan’s Sentencing Hearing Postponed - Again
Friday was to be the day that Shasta County Superior Court was scheduled to handle Norm Ryan’s judgment, sentencing and a potential motion for a retrial. You may recall he was found guilty in June on all five charges related to taking money from Haven Humane Society, where he was once its CEO.
But there was no sentencing after all.
His attorney, Henry Salcido of Long Beach, argued that his team needed yet more time to fully represent Ryan. More time to gather more …

Norm Ryan Sentencing Delayed
Former Haven Humane Society CEO Norm Ryan’s sentencing has been postponed until Aug. 28 to give a new attorney (his third) time to brush up on the case in the event Ryan decides to appeal.
On that date, the court is scheduled to handle the judgment, sentencing, and if necessary, a motion for a new trial, it was decided on Tuesday.
Last month Ryan was found guilty on all five felony counts against him charging that …

Kelly: Question of the week: Why’d the media cover the Haven Humane ex-CEO Norm Ryan embezzlement trial so closely? If I heard that question once I heard it a hundred times.
Doni : Oh, brother, tell me about it. Let’s discuss. You go first.
Kelly: One, the Ryan case had a huge readership. We can track the exact number of times a story is viewed, so we’ve known that all along. For whatever reasons, the public was captivated by it. So if they say it’s …

Update: Norm Ryan Guilty On All Five Counts
Update: Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at 11:29 a.m.
An impassive Norm Ryan heard the jury return verdicts of guilty on all five felony counts against him shortly after 11 a.m. today.
The jury had deliberated about six hours before reaching its decision.
He sat for the reading of the counts and betrayed no emotion, nor did his wife, who sat three rows behind him, where she’d been through her husband’s criminal trial on charges of swindling about $1,400 …

Kelly : How did you like covering that three-day trial this week? Were you fascinated? It must have had great moments. Any tidbits you haven’t already reported? What surprised you the most?

Norm Ryan Trial: Update - Prosecution & Defense Rest
The People rested late this afternoon in Norm Ryan’s trial. No more evidence. No more witnesses. I was sorry to see this part of the trial end.
So many questions remained unanswered. For example, what did board members Yvonne Preston and Nadine Bailey find on Ryan’s desk that caused them to call police?
Assuming it’s true that the Haven folks called in their computer tech on April 3 to copy Ryan’s hard drive (and …

Norm Ryan Finally Goes to Trial
Hard to believe it’s nearly been a year since we first covered the story of Norm Ryan, the former Haven Humane Society CEO accused of taking money from the animal shelter.
On Tuesday Ryan will go to trial on charges of embezzling $1,387 from Haven.
From the get-go this story has been as twisted as the road to Buckhorn Summit.
