Shasta County’s best-kept business secret

Shasta Metro Enterprise Zone

Small businesses that are hunkered down against the brutal economy might want to check out a way to significantly cut expenses: the Shasta Enterprise Zone.

The program, designed to punch up local business success in economically distressed areas, is hugely overlooked and unused, Redding biz booster Jim Zauher says.

It offers many credits and benefits on employees and equipment, such as:

  • Hiring tax credit
  • Sales and use tax credit
  • Business expense deduction
  • Net operating loss carryover
  • Deduction for lenders
  • Bid preference on state of California contracts

Companies that aren’t looking into the zone are leaving gobs of money on the table, Zauher, the city’s economic development director, says.

“I think people make assumptions that it’s hard because it’s a government program, or complicated,” he says. “Or they’re just so darned busy they forget it’s out there. Or their accountants aren’t aware. Newer companies see they can mitigate California’s high costs by offsetting them with easy credits.”

His job includes helping local companies in several ways, so he’s been making the rounds, outlining the enterprize zone concept and process. “As I leave meetings I feel like a hero because I get to explain how they can put money right back into their pockets.”

The City of Anderson also offers similar programs through various redevelopment programs in its Southwest Redevelopment Area, downtown revitalization, facade improvement, and economic development programs. A recent example of such successful partnerships include the expansion of locally owned Burrito Bandito into the downtown Anderson area. Opportunities abound in Anderson!

Thanks for the information, we’ll be looking for an offsite location in a few years.
(there’s a Burrito Bandito in Anderson? Can’t believe I missed it!)

The Burrito Bandito is currently in the early stages of construction. Completion is estimated for later this fall. Burrito Bandito will be located at the corner of East Center and South Streets, along with one, possibly two, other retail sites.

There’s a lead there Kelly (re: Burrito Bandito)! With a new business as an anchor to the downtown area of Anderson, you should see more improvements. They have a terrific package for those current business owners wanting to spruce up their businesses in that area. Anderson is doing everything right when it comes to progressive development. Just my humble opinion.
