The story my mother told me was that she got a letter from my father in mid-summer 1945, telling her that he was to be sent from Europe to the China Theater, which was almost certainly a death sentence. She was living at that time in a small house on Willis Street with her dog Pogo. She was sitting on the sofa sobbing, when the dog came over and sat down beside her and laid its head on her lap, just wanting to be company, understanding that she was in great grief.

But in August of 1945 the events now simply known as Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place, Japan surrendered, and my father came home on the Queen Mary.

Thank you for your years of service, especially the 10 months you spent at Sea aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln at the beginning of this Iraq war. I remain very proud of you.
